What is 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3?
D3 arises from endogenous synthesis in the skin under ultraviolet B exposure and from cholecalciferol in supplements and some fortified foods. Its 25-hydroxylated metabolite has higher affinity for vitamin D-binding protein and a longer circulating half-life than the D2 form, making it the predominant contributor to total 25(OH)D in most individuals.
