What is Alpha-Fetoprotein?
Alpha-fetoprotein is an oncofetal glycoprotein produced by the foetal yolk sac, liver, and gastrointestinal tract during gestation. Serum concentrations peak in foetal circulation around 12–14 weeks and fall rapidly after birth, reaching adult levels by one year. In adults, AFP expression is normally repressed; re-expression signals dedifferentiation in hepatocellular carcinoma, non-seminomatous germ-cell tumours, and occasionally gastric or pancreaticobiliary malignancies. The half-life in serum is five to seven days, making it useful for monitoring treatment response and detecting recurrence.
