What is Alternaria alternata IgE?
Alternaria alternata is a ubiquitous outdoor dematiaceous fungus that releases spores prolifically in warm, dry weather. Its allergens are potent triggers of type I hypersensitivity; exposure occurs through inhalation of airborne spores. IgE antibodies to Alternaria bind mast cells and basophils, and upon re-exposure the allergen crosslinks IgE, causing degranulation and release of histamine, leukotrienes, and cytokines that drive acute allergic inflammation.
