What is Babesia duncani (WA1) IgG Antibody by ImmunoBlot?
Babesia duncani (previously designated WA1) is a piroplasm distinct from B. microti that causes human babesiosis primarily on the western coast of North America — California, Oregon, and Washington — transmitted by Ixodes pacificus, the western black-legged tick. B. duncani is antigenically distinct from B. microti, meaning standard B. microti IFA and immunoblot assays do not reliably detect B. duncani-specific antibodies, and separate species-specific antigen testing is required for detection. B. duncani has been associated with more severe and rapidly progressive babesiosis than B. microti, including fatality in immunocompetent individuals in published case series.
