What is Babesia microti DNA?
Babesia microti is an intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite transmitted primarily by Ixodes scapularis, the same tick vector responsible for Lyme disease. After inoculation the sporozoites invade red blood cells, where they replicate asexually, causing haemolysis. Parasitaemia is typically low-level and intermittent, peaking during acute infection and waning as host immunity develops. The organism can persist at sub-microscopic levels for weeks to months, and chronic low-grade parasitaemia has been documented in immunocompromised hosts.
