What is Blastocystis hominis?
Blastocystis hominis is a polymorphic protist commonly found in human stool; its pathogenic role remains contested. Multiple subtypes exist, and some studies associate higher parasite loads and specific subtypes with gastrointestinal symptoms, while others regard it as a commensal. Microscopy and PCR both detect it, with PCR offering higher sensitivity.
