What is Escherichia coli antigen?
Escherichia coli comprises a diverse group of gram-negative enteric bacteria, most strains of which are commensal inhabitants of the human gut. Pathogenic strains — including enterohaemorrhagic (EHEC), enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enteropathogenic (EPEC), enteroaggregative (EAEC), and enteroinvasive (EIEC) variants — possess virulence factors that cause diarrhoeal illness through toxin production, adherence, or invasion. Detection of E. coli antigen by enzyme immunoassay targets conserved or pathotype-specific antigens shed in stool during active infection.
