What is Estradiol (Sensitive LC-MS/MS)?
Oestradiol is the most potent endogenous oestrogen, synthesised primarily by ovarian granulosa cells under luteinising hormone control in premenopausal women, with smaller contributions from adipose aromatisation of androgens and, during pregnancy, from the placenta. In men it arises almost entirely from peripheral aromatisation of testosterone. Circulating oestradiol is bound predominantly to sex hormone-binding globulin and albumin, with 1–2% free. The sensitive LC-MS/MS assay reliably quantifies oestradiol across the low ranges seen in men, postmenopausal women, and prepubertal children, where older immunoassays lack adequate specificity and precision.
