What is Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase?
Gamma-glutamyl transferase is a membrane-bound enzyme that catalyses the transfer of gamma-glutamyl groups and participates in glutathione metabolism and amino-acid transport. It is concentrated in hepatobiliary epithelium, particularly the canalicular membrane of hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells, with additional expression in the kidney, pancreas, and intestine. Although renal tissue has the highest concentration, serum GGT is overwhelmingly hepatobiliary in origin. The enzyme is inducible by alcohol and several drugs, and circulating activity reflects synthesis and biliary epithelial turnover.
