What is LDL Cholesterol (directly measured)?
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is the principal atherogenic lipoprotein, delivering cholesterol to peripheral tissues and depositing it within the arterial wall during atherogenesis. In standard lipid panels LDL-C is usually calculated from total cholesterol, HDL-C, and triglycerides using the Friedewald or a newer equation. A direct assay instead measures LDL cholesterol analytically, without relying on the triglyceride-dependent assumptions that make calculated LDL-C unreliable at high triglyceride levels or very low LDL-C.
