What is Prostatic Acid Phosphatase?
Prostatic acid phosphatase is a glycoprotein enzyme secreted by prostatic epithelial cells, with high concentrations in prostatic tissue and seminal fluid. Small amounts circulate in serum under normal conditions. When prostatic architecture is disrupted — by malignancy, inflammation, or instrumentation — larger quantities enter the bloodstream. PAP has a shorter circulating half-life than prostate-specific antigen and is less stable in vitro, requiring careful specimen handling.
