What is Phosphorus (Inorganic Phosphate)?
Phosphate is the principal intracellular anion and an essential constituent of ATP, nucleic acids, phospholipid membranes, and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate. Approximately 85% of body phosphate resides in bone as hydroxyapatite and most of the remainder is intracellular, leaving under 1% in the extracellular compartment that serum measurement samples. Homeostasis is governed by fibroblast growth factor 23, parathyroid hormone, and calcitriol acting on renal proximal tubular reabsorption and intestinal absorption. Serum levels follow a diurnal rhythm, with a nadir in the morning and a rise through the afternoon and evening.
