What is Platelet Count and Mean Platelet Volume?
Platelets are anucleate cytoplasmic fragments derived from megakaryocyte fragmentation in the bone marrow, produced under thrombopoietin (TPO) regulation with a circulating lifespan of 8–12 days. They are the primary cellular mediators of primary haemostasis — adhering to exposed subendothelial collagen via von Willebrand factor (vWF) and glycoprotein Ib-IX, activating, releasing granule contents (ADP, serotonin, thromboxane A2), and aggregating to form the primary platelet plug before coagulation cascade amplification. Mean platelet volume (MPV) reflects the average size of circulating platelets — larger platelets are metabolically more active, contain more granules, and have greater thrombogenic potential than smaller platelets.
