What is Pregnenolone (by LC-MS/MS)?
Pregnenolone is the first product of steroidogenesis, formed from cholesterol by the side-chain cleavage enzyme (CYP11A1) in mitochondria — the rate-limiting committed step of steroid synthesis. It is the common upstream precursor for all steroid hormones, feeding the progestogen, glucocorticoid, mineralocorticoid, androgen, and oestrogen pathways, and is produced in the adrenal cortex, gonads, and brain (as a neurosteroid). It circulates at low concentrations with a short half-life.
