What is Prostate-Specific Antigen, Total?
Prostate-specific antigen is a serine protease (kallikrein-3) produced almost exclusively by prostatic epithelial cells, with the physiological role of liquefying seminal fluid. It circulates in free and protein-complexed forms, the sum of which is the total PSA. Although highly tissue-specific to the prostate, PSA is not cancer-specific: it rises with benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, prostatic manipulation, and age, as well as with malignancy. PSA has a serum half-life of around 2–3 days.
