What is Urine Creatinine?
Creatinine is the non-enzymatic breakdown product of creatine phosphate in skeletal muscle, filtered freely at the glomerulus and excreted without tubular reabsorption. Its urinary concentration depends on glomerular filtration rate, muscle mass, dietary creatine intake, and urine volume. In a random spot urine specimen, creatinine concentration fluctuates with fluid intake and the degree of urine concentration, which is why it is measured not as a clinical end-point but as a denominator to correct other analytes for dilution.
