Description
The Hepatitis A IgM Antibody Test from BiomarkersLabs.com measures IgM antibodies specific to Hepatitis A virus (HAV) — the definitive serological marker of acute Hepatitis A infection. HAV is a non-enveloped RNA virus transmitted by the faecal-oral route through contaminated food, water, or person-to-person contact. It produces a self-limiting acute hepatitis in immunocompetent individuals — characterised by fever, jaundice, nausea, and markedly elevated transaminases — that resolves completely without chronic sequelae in the vast majority of cases, though fulminant hepatic failure can occur in a small percentage, particularly in patients with pre-existing liver disease. Anti-HAV IgM becomes detectable within 2–4 weeks of infection — at the time of symptom onset — and persists for 3–6 months before being replaced by the long-lasting anti-HAV IgG of natural immunity. A positive anti-HAV IgM result is diagnostic of acute or very recent HAV infection. Specimens processed through CLIA-certified partner laboratories. Results delivered within 1–3 business days. Available in USA · EU · UK · Canada. Licensed practitioners only.
What does this test measure?
Anti-HAV IgM — IgM class antibody against Hepatitis A virus. Positive result indicates acute or recent HAV infection (within 3–6 months). Negative result excludes acute HAV infection.
Clinical indications
Suspected acute hepatitis A infection — any patient presenting with acute hepatitis symptoms (jaundice, fever, nausea, right upper quadrant discomfort, markedly elevated ALT and AST) where HAV is in the differential.
Outbreak investigation — HAV outbreaks from contaminated food sources or water supplies require rapid serological confirmation of cases.
Jaundice of hepatic aetiology workup — HAV IgM is included in the acute jaundice investigative panel alongside HBsAg, HCV antibody, and LFTs.
Travel-related hepatitis A exposure — patients returning from HAV-endemic regions with hepatitis symptoms.
Acute liver disease with hepatitis A in differential — ruling in or out HAV as the cause of acute hepatic decompensation.
Sample type and collection
Blood (serum). No fasting required. 1–3 business days. USA · EU · UK · Canada. No New York restriction. CLIA · IVDR · CE · HIPAA · GDPR · PIPEDA.
