What is Apolipoprotein A-1?
Apolipoprotein A-1 is the principal structural and functional protein of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, comprising roughly 70% of HDL protein mass. It serves as the activating cofactor for lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), the enzyme that esterifies free cholesterol and drives reverse cholesterol transport from peripheral tissues to the liver. Each HDL particle carries two to four ApoA-1 molecules, and plasma ApoA-1 concentration reflects both the number and functionality of these atheroprotective particles.
