What is Apolipoprotein B?
Apolipoprotein B is the principal structural protein of atherogenic lipoproteins — each VLDL, IDL, LDL, and lipoprotein(a) particle carries precisely one ApoB molecule, making ApoB concentration a direct count of circulating atherogenic particles. Unlike LDL cholesterol, which estimates the cholesterol mass in LDL and is influenced by particle size and composition, ApoB measures particle number irrespective of lipid content. It is synthesised constitutively in the liver and intestine, and its plasma concentration is determined by production and receptor-mediated clearance.
