What is Apolipoprotein A1?
Apolipoprotein A1 is the principal structural and functional protein of high-density lipoprotein particles. Synthesised predominantly in the liver and intestine, it accounts for roughly 70% of HDL protein mass and serves as a cofactor for lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase, the enzyme that esterifies free cholesterol on the HDL surface and drives reverse cholesterol transport. Apo A1 also stabilises the HDL particle, binds cell-surface receptors that mediate cholesterol efflux, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties within the arterial wall.
