What is Babesia-specific Immunoglobulin M?
Immunoglobulin M antibodies to Babesia species emerge during the acute phase of infection, typically within the first few weeks of illness. Babesiosis is caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa transmitted by Ixodes ticks, often co-transmitted with Borrelia burgdorferi. The immunoblot (Western blot) technique separates parasite antigens by molecular weight, allowing identification of species-specific antibody responses to individual protein bands. IgM responses can be transient or may persist for months, and cross-reactivity with other parasites or antibodies is possible.
