What is Food-Specific Immunoglobulin A?
Immunoglobulin A is the dominant antibody at mucosal surfaces, secreted into the gut lumen where it neutralises pathogens and dietary antigens. Serum IgA to food proteins reflects mucosal exposure and may indicate a break in oral tolerance or active mucosal inflammation. Unlike IgE, which mediates immediate allergic reactions, IgA responses are part of the secretory immune system and are thought by some to correlate with ongoing gut permeability or inflammatory gut conditions, though evidence for this is contested.
