What is Red Blood Cell Magnesium?
Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation and an essential cofactor for over 300 enzymatic reactions. Red blood cell magnesium measures the concentration held within erythrocytes, where intracellular magnesium is far higher than in serum. Because the great majority of body magnesium is intracellular, the red-cell concentration is proposed as a closer reflection of tissue stores than the serum level, which represents less than 1% of total body magnesium and is tightly regulated. RBC magnesium turns over more slowly than serum and is less subject to acute fluctuation.
