What is Mercury, Urine?
Urinary mercury predominantly reflects inorganic mercury and methylmercury demethylation products — the renal route is the primary excretory pathway for inorganic mercury, while methylmercury (from fish consumption) is excreted primarily in faeces via bile. Hair mercury and whole-blood mercury are superior markers for methylmercury assessment; urinary mercury is the preferred matrix for inorganic and elemental mercury exposure monitoring (dental amalgam, industrial exposure). Mercury has a high affinity for sulfhydryl groups, inhibiting selenoenzymes, thioredoxin reductase, and glutathione peroxidase, disrupting mitochondrial function and antioxidant defence.
