What is Arsenic (Urine)?
Arsenic exists in organic and inorganic forms with profoundly different toxicological profiles. Inorganic arsenic — trivalent arsenite (As³⁺) and pentavalent arsenate (As⁵⁺) — is the toxic species, derived from contaminated groundwater, rice, industrial exposure, and pressure-treated wood. Organic arsenobetaine, the predominant arsenic form in seafood, is essentially non-toxic and rapidly excreted in urine. Following inorganic arsenic absorption, the body sequentially methylates it to monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) via arsenic methyltransferase (AS3MT) — a detoxification pathway requiring folate, B12, and methionine as cofactors. Urinary speciation of MMA and DMA alongside inorganic arsenic fractions provides the full metabolic profile.
