What is Cadmium (Blood)?
Cadmium is a nephrotoxic and carcinogenic heavy metal with no known physiological role. Exposure occurs chiefly through tobacco smoke, occupational inhalation (smelting, battery manufacture, pigment industries), and dietary intake from contaminated crops grown in polluted soil. Once absorbed, cadmium binds to metallothionein and accumulates slowly in the kidneys and liver, with a biological half-life measured in decades. Blood cadmium reflects recent or ongoing exposure—typically over the preceding few months—whereas urinary cadmium correlates better with total body burden and chronic tissue accumulation.
