What is Stachybotrys chartarum?
Stachybotrys chartarum is a cellulose-degrading mould requiring sustained high moisture (>90% relative humidity) and is typically found on wet gypsum wallboard, ceiling tiles, and paper-faced materials after flooding or chronic leaks. It produces trichothecene mycotoxins, which inhibit protein synthesis and disrupt cellular membranes.
