What is Zinc?
Zinc is an essential trace element and a cofactor for over 300 enzymes, with structural and catalytic roles in protein synthesis, immune function, wound healing, growth, and gene regulation. The body has no dedicated storage pool, so status depends on the balance of intake, absorption, and losses. Plasma holds only a small fraction of total body zinc, much of it bound to albumin and alpha-2-macroglobulin, and the level is influenced by recent intake, diurnal rhythm, and the acute-phase response. Red cells contain far higher zinc concentrations than plasma.
