What is Aflatoxin M1?
Aflatoxin M1 is the hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1, produced primarily by Aspergillus species that contaminate grains, nuts, and animal feed. Following ingestion, hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes convert aflatoxin B1 to M1, which is then renally excreted. Aflatoxins are potent hepatotoxins and carcinogens; chronic exposure is linked to hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly in regions with endemic hepatitis B.
