What is Thyroglobulin Antibody (Anti-TG)?
Thyroglobulin is a large 660 kDa dimeric glycoprotein produced exclusively by thyroid follicular cells, serving as the protein scaffold upon which thyroid hormone synthesis occurs within the follicular colloid. Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are IgG autoantibodies directed against conformational and linear epitopes on the thyroglobulin molecule, co-occurring with Anti-TPO in many patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Anti-TG occurs less commonly than Anti-TPO in autoimmune thyroid disease and has lower diagnostic sensitivity alone, but provides additive diagnostic value when Anti-TPO is absent or borderline in a patient with clinical features of autoimmune thyroid disease.
