What is Carbon Dioxide (Bicarbonate), Serum?
Total CO2 in the CMP is measured by an enzymatic method on serum and primarily represents bicarbonate — the principal extracellular buffer maintaining blood pH. Bicarbonate is generated by the reaction of CO2 and water catalysed by carbonic anhydrase in erythrocytes and renal tubular cells, and is the primary renal component of acid-base regulation — the kidney excretes or retains bicarbonate to compensate for respiratory CO2 imbalances and to regulate non-volatile acid load from metabolism.
