What is Cortisol?
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone synthesised in the adrenal cortex under ACTH control, following a circadian rhythm with peak levels in the early morning and a nadir at night. It regulates glucose metabolism, immune function, and the stress response. Urinary cortisol excretion integrates total cortisol production over the collection window and is influenced by timing, hydration, and renal function.
