What is Cortisone?
Cortisone is the inactive 11-keto metabolite of cortisol, generated by 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 in the kidney and other tissues. It is rapidly interconverted with cortisol, and urinary cortisone excretion reflects both direct secretion and peripheral inactivation of cortisol. The cortisol-to-cortisone ratio provides insight into the balance between active glucocorticoid and its inactivation.
