What is Dehydroepiandrosterone?
Dehydroepiandrosterone is the principal C19 steroid secreted by the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex and a precursor for peripheral androgen and oestrogen synthesis. DHEA (and its sulphated form DHEAS in serum) peak in early adulthood and decline progressively with age. Salivary DHEA reflects free, unconjugated hormone.
