What is Estrone?
Estrone is synthesised in the ovaries and by peripheral aromatisation of androstenedione in adipose tissue, with the latter route dominating after menopause. It can be interconverted with estradiol by 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and undergoes irreversible hydroxylation along multiple pathways. In urine, estrone and its phase-I and phase-II metabolites reflect integrated production and metabolism over the collection interval.
