What is Cortisol Awakening Response?
The cortisol awakening response is the sharp, transient rise in cortisol occurring in the 30 to 45 minutes after waking, superimposed on the underlying diurnal rhythm. It is thought to reflect a distinct anticipatory activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis associated with the transition to wakefulness, mediated partly through the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and is influenced by sleep quality, awakening time, light exposure, and anticipated demands of the day. It is highly sensitive to protocol adherence: sampling must begin immediately on waking, and delay of even a few minutes materially distorts the calculated response.
