What is Intestinal Fatty Acid-Binding Protein?
I-FABP is a small cytoplasmic protein highly specific to mature enterocytes of the small intestine, involved in intracellular fatty-acid transport. It is released into the circulation when enterocytes are damaged or undergo necrosis, making it a marker of acute intestinal epithelial injury. Its plasma half-life is short (approximately 11 minutes), so it reflects recent or ongoing injury.
