What is Lactobacillus species abundance?
Lactobacillus species are early colonisers, particularly in vaginally delivered infants who acquire maternal vaginal lactobacilli during birth. They produce lactic acid and bacteriocins that inhibit pathogens and modulate immune signalling. Abundance varies with delivery mode and feeding practice and typically declines relative to Bifidobacterium as the milk-fed microbiome matures.
