What is Pathobiont and pathogen detection?
Pathobionts are commensal organisms that can become pathogenic when the microbiome is disrupted or the mucosal barrier is immature. Clostridioides difficile, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and enteropathogenic E. coli may transiently colonise neonates but are normally outcompeted by beneficial commensals. Candida overgrowth occurs with antibiotic exposure or dysbiosis.
