What is LDL Particle Number?
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy exploits the fact that lipoprotein particles of different size emit distinct magnetic signals from the methyl groups of their lipid constituents. The amplitude of each signal is proportional to the number of particles emitting it, allowing particle concentrations to be derived directly from a single scan without chemical separation. LDL particle number counts the circulating low-density lipoprotein particles themselves rather than the cholesterol they carry, and the two diverge whenever particles are cholesterol-depleted.
