What is Lipoprotein Subfractions (LDL size, small LDL particle number, HDL particle number, VLDL particle number and size)?
The same NMR scan resolves lipoprotein particles by size, yielding LDL particle size, small dense LDL particle concentration, HDL particle number, and VLDL particle number and size. Small dense LDL particles have reduced affinity for the LDL receptor, longer residence time in circulation, and greater susceptibility to oxidation, which underlies the hypothesis that they are disproportionately atherogenic. This phenotype is characteristically associated with insulin resistance and hypertriglyceridaemia.
