What is Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (dried blood spot)?
SHBG is a hepatic glycoprotein that binds testosterone and oestradiol with high affinity, regulating the bioavailable fraction of sex steroids. Its synthesis is increased by oestrogens and thyroid hormone and decreased by androgens, insulin, and obesity. SHBG concentration influences the free and bioavailable hormone pools, so measurement alongside total testosterone or oestradiol refines interpretation of androgen and oestrogen status.
