What is Apolipoprotein B?
Apolipoprotein B is a large structural apolipoprotein, present as a single copy on each atherogenic lipoprotein particle — very-low-density lipoprotein, intermediate-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and lipoprotein(a). Unlike cholesterol concentration, which reflects the total cholesterol cargo carried by these particles, Apo-B provides a direct count of circulating atherogenic particles. It remains bound throughout the lifespan of each particle, mediating receptor binding and clearance via the hepatic LDL receptor and serving as the essential structural scaffold for triglyceride and cholesterol transport from the liver and intestine.
