What is Lipoprotein(a)?
Lipoprotein(a) is a low-density lipoprotein particle covalently bound to apolipoprotein(a), a protein whose size and serum concentration are determined almost entirely by the LPA gene. Apo(a) contains kringle domains structurally similar to plasminogen, conferring pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory properties. Lp(a) concentration is stable across the lifespan and unaffected by most lipid-lowering drugs, making it a genetically determined, lifelong cardiovascular risk factor independent of LDL cholesterol.
