What is Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase A1298C Polymorphism?
The A1298C polymorphism (rs1801131) in the MTHFR gene causes a glutamate-to-alanine substitution in a different regulatory domain than C677T. The variant reduces enzyme activity to a lesser degree than C677T—approximately 70% in homozygotes—and its functional impact is more modest. Compound heterozygosity (C677T/A1298C) can also reduce MTHFR activity, though the phenotypic effect is variable and dependent on folate status and other genetic and environmental factors.
