What is Faecalibacterium prausnitzii?
Faecalibacterium prausnitzii is one of the most abundant commensal species of the healthy adult colon and a major producer of butyrate through fibre fermentation. Butyrate is a principal energy source for colonocytes and has been studied for roles in epithelial barrier maintenance and mucosal immune signalling. Its relative abundance is sensitive to dietary fibre intake and to colonic conditions such as oxygen tension and pH.
