What is Follicle Stimulating Hormone?
Follicle stimulating hormone is a gonadotrophin secreted by the anterior pituitary under pulsatile gonadotrophin-releasing hormone control, which stimulates ovarian follicular recruitment and granulosa cell oestradiol production. It is regulated by negative feedback from oestradiol and inhibin B, so as the follicular pool declines with age, reduced inhibin B feedback allows FSH to rise. Levels vary markedly across the menstrual cycle, with a follicular baseline, a mid-cycle surge, and a luteal decline.
