What is Oestradiol (E2)?
Oestradiol is the principal circulating oestrogen, produced predominantly by ovarian granulosa cells under FSH stimulation, with smaller contributions from peripheral aromatisation of androgens in adipose tissue. It rises through the follicular phase to a pre-ovulatory peak that triggers the LH surge, falls after ovulation, and rises again in the luteal phase. Most circulating oestradiol is bound to sex hormone binding globulin and albumin.
