What is Iodine, Urine (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry)?
Iodine is an essential trace element and the rate-limiting substrate for thyroid hormone synthesis. Dietary iodine is absorbed in the small bowel, concentrated by the thyroid via the sodium-iodide symporter, and excess is excreted renally. Urinary iodine reflects recent intake; inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) provides high sensitivity and specificity, free from the matrix effects seen in some colorimetric assays.
