What is Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone?
Thyrotropin is a glycoprotein synthesised by anterior pituitary thyrotrophs under negative feedback from circulating free T₄ and T₃. It drives thyroid hormone synthesis and release, and its concentration is the most sensitive first-line indicator of thyroid axis dysfunction. Dried blood spot measurement captures TSH at the time of finger-prick collection; correlation with venous serum TSH is well established, though reference intervals may differ slightly by platform.
